The “Comb Project” is an initiative developed by Mayuko Fujiwara as part of the MA Material Futures program at Central Saint Martins, running from October to December 2024. This project was born out of the “Re-activating Craft” challenge, where she expanded on the craft of “hair-cutting”. In her project, she extracted keratin from human hair and used it to create combs. These combs serve as an alternative to the traditional combs made from animal horns. The project explores the potential for personalised combs and proposes a future use for the hair waste produced in salons, turning it into a valuable material rather than letting it go to waste.
